Si esatto, sono passati proprio 17 anni da quando Maceo Parker (sassofonista contralto ufficiale del Re del Soul James brown) pubblicò l’album che segnò la storia del Funk per l’eternità e lo rese un’icona del genere. FunkOverload, un album di appena 11 tracce ma che conteneva un genere musicale mai sentito, con suoni stoppati, paccosi, carichi di groove che rendevano involonatriamente gli ascoltatori affetti dal ‘ballo di san vito’, insomma restare fermi era fisicamente impossibile. La Cream Records, What Are Records che pubblicò quell’album non potè credere ai suoi occhi, anzi, meglio dire alle sue orecchie, quando sentì il numero dei milioni di copie vendute in tutto il mondo. Maceo Parker con Funkoverload aprì una nuova generazione di Funk, dove si raccontavano buffe storie in accoppiata con virtuosi arrangiamenti, terzine di semiminima, sestine e temi principali ballad suonati da tromboni e sassofoni contralti in contrasto con linee di basso slappanti e monotonali che convergevano verso quel mitico ritornello che con passo stoico, faceva ballare chiunque lo ascoltasse o lo suonasse. Gli accenti vocali cantati con colpi di diaframma da Maceo in levare sugli arrangiamenti come “Uh”, “Soul”, “Check It Out” e “Sound Like This”. Tutte frasettine semplici ma che collocate nell’arrangiamento solo come Parker sapeva fare (e come fa ancora oggi), davano colore e tridimensionalità al brano.
Qui ricordiamo quelle tracce che sono diventate più famose e che echeggiano ancora oggi a distanza di diciassette anni nelle orecchie e nelle anime degli ascoltatori di Funk:

Soprattutto voglio citare il brano che più rimase nella mente degli ascoltatori, come ironica storia e come incredibile arrangiamento cioè ‘Elephant’s Foot’, dove qui sotto propongo il video:

What You Know about Funk è un brano rappato proprio da Maceo parker, che vede tutti i suoi musicisti della sua formazione ‘Funky stuff’ (a cui partecipò numerose volte Fred Wesley, trombonista solista di Maceo parker) come una classe scolastica che fa parte di un istituto o meglio un’università dove l’unica materia insegnata è il Funk. Interessante come il fatto che moltissimi musicisti di questo genere abbiano sognato una scuola del genere e che questo album sia rimasto nell’immaginario collettivo di tantissime persone.
